Speaker(s): M. Adam Kendall
  • This Wednesday's speaker is M. Adam Kendall, lead developer for EZRO, the president of Roanoke Valley GNU/Linux Users Group, and the creator and chief programmer of http://zopelabs.com . He will talk about Devis EZ Reusable Objects (EZRO) is a content management system which can be used for many different kinds of websites, including traditional information presentation sites such as http://www.devis.com/ , portals like http://www.milspouse.org/ , training sites like http://cable.devis.com/ , and coach style sites. A coaching site appears as a frame on the edge of the screen and drives another site in order to walk the user through that site, as in http://www.careeronestopcoach.org/.

    EZRO is built on top of Zope and runs across Linux, MacOS X and Windows platforms. Devis hosts exclusively using Linux-based systems. EZRO was the outgrowth of a number of contracts with the Department of Labor over the years from 2001 through 2005. It was developed under the name of Workforce Connections. Devis contributed its copyright to the Department of Labor to allow them to release it as an open source tool in January 2004. EZRO is a more advanced version of the Workforce Connections software that has been released by Devis under the GPL.

Speaker(s): Justin B. Newman
  • This month, Justin B Newman will introduce VoIP ("Voice over IP"), which seems to be gathering momentum as an alternative to traditional telecommunication services. Linux seems to be a popular platform for VOIP endpoint stations, as well as for the telecom infrastructure. Justin will focus on how voice and IP networks interconnect (hardware, software, protocols, and telco services) as well as the open source PBX Asterisk. Justin's company BinFone Telecom is headquartered in Baltimore and provides wholesale VoIP services.

    The DCLUG meeting dates for 2005 are: Apr 20, May 18, Jun 15, Jul 20, Aug 17, Sep 21, Oct 19, Nov 16 and Dec 21.

Speaker(s): Przemek
  • This month, Przemek Klosowski discussed the source code management (SCM) tools. In recent days, there was a big blowback resulting from Linus announcing that the BitKeeper SCM will no longer be used for the Linux kernel; as a result, we are urgently needing a new SCM system. Why is SCM important for Linux, what's wrong with CVS/Arch/SVN, and why is it suddenly important now? Come to the meeting to find out. Currently, 'monotone' SCM is being considered, as well as GIT, Linus' own contraption; we'll discuss them briefly.

Speaker(s): Brantley Coile
  • This month Brantley Coile, CTO of network storage startup Coraid, will give a talk titled "EtherDrive Storage Blades and the History of Networks and Storage". He will cover history of disks and networking and how they came together. From IBM's first hard disks in the 50's, to today's 400GB monsters, and from Bob Metcalfe's 3Mbps Ethernet to today's 10Gbps links, we are witnessing enormous advances, with no end in sight. Brantley will outline the ideas and future of network storage, using NFS, iSCSI and AoE protocols.

    Brantley has been doing Unix stuff for over 20 years, first with Seventh Edition Unix. Brantley did pioneering work in embedding Unix in the 1980s, and was the first to develop a disk caddy for SCSI disk in 1986. Brantley is also known for the invention of stateful packet inspection and tcp based load sharing network applicance. He worked on Cisco PIX and the Cisco LocalDirector. He is a co-inventor of the AoE protocol, used in his company's EtherDrive and RAIDblade storage products.

Speaker(s): Ken Rubotzky
  • Ken Rubotzky will talk about maps on Linux---or, how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) became cheap and accessible. With the proliferation of opensource GIS distributions, apps, viewers, models, statistical packages, GIS is becoming available to those with little money and lots of time. His presentation will try to show how to save some of that time. Among other things, Ken will show how to make thematic maps that have lasting value and tell compelling stories.

    ================ FUND DRIVE ======================

    we'll pass the hat after the meeting to pay back our debt to Megan for her expenses organizing our FOSE booth. Folks, please be generous, we owe her.
